Socrates Society:

   Not just for Greeks

Students looking for a club that welcomes expressive, strong, opinionated members will find their place in Socrates Society.

Socrates Society meets in Mr. Harris’ room every Thursday at 3:40 to discuss current controversial topics like abortion, right to die, and the possibility of life on other planets.

“Most of the time students generally only get to hear opinions of other people, like their parents, and they never actually get an opportunity to express and develop their own opinions and thoughts on important issues today.” Tarek Zaher, the club’s current President, said, “Socrates is a respectable and organized setting for students to express themselves and develop their own ideas and opinions.”

Issac Quiroz will be taking over the club as President next year and hopes to embody the same principles Zaher has upheld throughout his time as President.

“I don’t think Socrates should really be changed. It’s always been simple at the heart of the club; it was part hang out, part discussing your opinions,” Quiroz said, “It’s kind of carefree but we also want to respect each other's boundaries. It’ll stay the same with heart.”

Club members meet to express their opinions and educate themselves about controversial events, topics, people, and places.

“I found it a great opportunity to be able to voice my opinions and be able to hear the opinion of others,” Matthew Mitchell, a member of the society, said, “And maybe help educate those that may otherwise not be.”
