Red Ribbon Week

Ramsay Campbell

Red Ribbon Week is a week filled with silly costumes and wacky days that are fun for both students and faculty, but sometimes the real reason we have Red Ribbon is lost in the fun activities.

Enrique (Kiki) S. Camerena was a policeman for the El Centro P.D., where he was investigating a multi-million dollar drug ring. He was kidnapped by the cartel February 7, 1985. He was found murdered March 5, 1985 at the age of 35. In his honor, the students of his high school, Calexico High School in Calexico, California, wore red ribbons and pledged to be drug-free. The week has now become something that is observed by schools across the country.

While the week is fun and has many interactive activities (America Day, Red Day, Wacky Tacky Wednesday, Tourist Day, and Halloween Costume Day), the meaning is often forgotten. The Drug Free Club at Hudson High School is in charge of the week, working hard in the community and working on making the fun theme days we all love so much. Despite their tremendous efforts, high school students are still susceptible to participating in drug and alcohol activities. This is where education about drugs and alcohol is critical.

Some of the teachers have dedicated some of their class time to education about the various risks of such activities. But, it still isn’t enough. Students are not getting enough of the critical education about the risks and effects of drugs and alcohol. What can the staff and students of Hudson High School do to make sure students are properly educated about this critical issue? During Red Ribbon Week and through out the year, teachers should make an effort to use a few minutes a day or week to educate students of this issue and issues like this. Likewise, students should be seeking out information like this and should be open to the education that teachers are relaying to them about drugs and alcohol, because one day it could save your life. By students and teachers doing their part towards this education, Red Ribbon Week will more meaningful and more representative of its original purpose
