Hudson has taken the first step into joining the hundreds of high schools preparing their students for a quickly evolving future. Through the creation of the Nerd Herd club, Tyler Parks and Michael Welch, with the help of Mr. Harris, are providing over 70 students in Hudson High School a place to practice and learn about hot topics and games as well as find like minded people within the community with similar interests. “Tyler and I just wanted a place for people to play video games, make new friends, and make good memories, all of which I think we've done pretty successfully.” states Michael Welch, club president. Nerd Herd offers a wide variety of subjects from card games to movies, but the most popular is video gaming. With 40 colleges giving over 4 million dollars in scholarships for new players to join their competitive teams, esports is making its way into mainstream sports and has a seat in the 2020 olympics. Almost every week, Nerd Herd holds exciting tournaments over various platforms and games. This provides perfect exposure for those who wish to continue their passion later on in life and possibly join these competitive teams in college. On Friday the 13th of October, Nerd Herd held their second Smash Bros. tournament this year and had an amazing turnout. With 40 people in attendance and an entrance fee of $5, they were able to provide pizza and a prize pool for the victor, Sebastian Benitez. Before the finals, those who were not participating in the tournament were allowed to play other things with their friends and socialize. A few of the games included, Magic: the Gathering, Pokemon, Mario Kart, and the Nintendo Switch. In the future, Nerd Herd will also hold competitions for Hearthstone, a variety of console games, and of course more Smash Brothers tournaments. For those who aren't into the gaming scene, Nerd Herd held a movie night on Wednesday, October 25th where they watched and discussed Interstellar in the media center after school. Nerd Herd is working on having more movie nights in the future, as well as card game competitions and debates. The presidents make sure to stay connected with the club members by sending out emails weekly for them to vote on what they will do on the next meeting and always take in new suggestions. Michael is very hopeful in what the future may hold for Nerd Herd and stated, “ I hope in the future of Nerd Herd, there are still as many dedicated and friendly people as there are today, as long as that remains the same, I think Nerd Herd will be just fine.”
