Which Christmas movies should you watch over your break?

By: Ariel Inman

With Christmas break finally upon us, students can begin to unwind and look forward to the upcoming Christmas festivities. A popular tradition among Americans across the nation is to gather on the living room couch with their close family, hunker down under a fort of blankets, and eat a bowl of popcorn while watching a Christmas movie. Some families enjoy classical films while others are more prone to romance or comedy movies. If your family can’t agree on a movie to watch over Christmas break, here are some highly recommended Christmas movies that the Hudson student body agree are must sees for the holiday season.

The most popular Christmas movie among Hudson students is Elf. This movie is about a human, “Buddy” (played by Will Ferrell), who lives in the North Pole as an elf. When he discovers that he’s human and his father lives in New York City, he embarks upon a journey to meet his estranged father who happens to be on Santa’s naughty list. He meets his father and proceeds to try to convince him that he is indeed his son for a portion of the movie. Despite adversity, Buddy is finally able to prove that he is Walter Hobbs’ son and begins going to work with his dad. Due to the fact that Buddy is untrained in the social normalities of New York, he causes several incidents at his father’s workplace and is eventually sent to the mailroom. Meanwhile, Buddy also accidentally lands a job at a Christmas store where he meets Jovie and instantly falls in love with her. After they go on a date, Buddy has a falling out with his father and while he is leaving New York City Santa crash lands in Central Park. Buddy finds him and helps to repair his sleigh while others try to build Christmas spirit to help Santa escape the Central Park rangers. Santa makes a clean getaway, Buddy and Jovie get married, and Christmas spirit is at an all time high in New York. This movie is full of humor, romance, and fantasy, a combination that is sure to keep everyone happy during the family Christmas movie marathon.

Famous quotes from Elf include:

“The best way to spread Christmas Cheer, is singing loud for all to hear.”

“I’m a cotton-headed ninny-muggins.”

“I’m sorry I ruined your lives and crammed eleven cookies in the VCR.”

“Deb, you have such a pretty face, you should be on a Christmas card.”

“You sit on a throne of lies.”

“You did it! Congratulations! World’s best cup of coffee! Great job, everybody!”

“Miles Finch: You feeling strong, my friend? Call me elf one more time. Buddy: [after a pause] He's an angry elf.“

We elves try to stick to the four basic food groups; “ candy corn, candy canes, candy and syrup.”

Other well loved movies Hudson students would recommend include: It’s a Wonderful Life, Christmas Story, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Home Alone, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, A Christmas Carol, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street, The Polar Express, The Santa Clause, Holiday in Handcuffs, Jingle All the Way, Christmas with the Kranks, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
