Hudson Homecoming Court ready to take the stage

By: Ariel Inman

“Now, everybody give a round of applause and welcome Hudson High School’s 2016 Homecoming Court!” The crowd in the stands roared to their feet, cheering as the court entered through the side gym doors. Background music blared behind the whistles and shouts from onlookers while the nominees were introduced. The single spotlight highlighted each couple as they made their way to the center of the floor. The crystals on the girls’ dresses refracted and tossed back the bright white light, casting a shimmering mirage of starlight over the audience.

“Now the moment I know you've all been waiting for. It's time to announce this year's senior Homecoming King and Queen.” A silence of anticipation settled over everyone in the crowded gym as the envelope was opened, revealing the 2016 winners.

This will be the scene next Friday, January 29th, after Hudson’s homecoming basketball game against Diboll. The games start at 5:00 pm in the Hornet Gym and Hudson’s Sophmore, Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams will be competing against the Diboll Lumberjacks. The senior court will be narrowed down from eight nominees to the final two. Female nominees include: Carly Lankford, Rachel Hill, Adrianna Smothermon, and Lindsey Burcham. Male nominees include: Simon Toole, Javarius Cooper, Darren Castilaw, and Zack Pierce.

These candidates were announced during a pep rally after senior class members cast their votes.

“I was really surprised,” Darren Castilaw, court nominee, said, “I wasn't even planning on getting it but I was really surprised when they announced my name.”

Adrianna Smothermon was also taken by surprise at her nomination.

“Yes, I was very surprised because I knew people knew me but I didn’t think that people knew me enough to actually be a nominee for homecoming,” Smothermon said, “I didn’t think I’d actually be on the court. It’s crazy.”

All Hudson High School students will be voting for the 2016 King and Queen during the Homecoming week of January 25th thru 29th.

“Just vote for whoever you want to,” Castilaw said, “For your friends, for the people you like, for the people who deserve it.”
