Hudson Soccer falls victim to thievery in Crockett

By: Kristen Ferrara

On February 9, 2016, three phones, two backpacks, and a letterman jacket were stolen off a Hudson bus in Crockett while the Hornets and Bulldogs were facing each other in the last pre-season soccer game.

Derek Lillard, coach of the Lady Hornets, claims, “This is the first time this has happened to my team in sixteen years. I’ve never had anything stolen off of a bus. Now I know there have been other instances where things have been stolen from other teams, but as far as me, never. I was shocked that it had happened.”

Some of the stolen items were property of Hudson High School.

Alexandrea Villarreal, a victim, affirms, “A school Macbook along with a school calculator and my iPad and a lot of my schoolwork was stolen. I lost all my stuff for some of my classes which I was really upset about, but on top of losing all of the electronics, the fact that some of them did not belong to me made me even more angry,”

The loss of these items will lead to someone writing a very large check - the identity of that individual, possibly an insurance provider or employee of HHS, is uncertain.

Coach Lillard claims, “As far as the insurance policy goes I don’t know. It has to be up to a certain amount for those items to be covered, so I really didn’t get a definate answer on that.”

Despite this sorry reality, Coach Lillard and Villarreal both agree that this in no way reflects the entire community of Crockett.

Lillard confesses, “Honestly, I don’t think this reflects on the school or community of Crockett, it’s just a few individuals who decided to make a bad decision.” In addition, Villarreal believes, “This shows that those individuals were not raised the right way to know that stealing is wrong and impacts lives other than theirs. I hope that - whatever their reason was for stealing - they truly needed that money.”

Despite this unfortunate experience, the both teams were triumphant on the field. The Lady Hornets took a 2-0 win while the Hornets won the game 9-1.
