Class Officers
Kristina Johnson
On Friday, September 23, the students of Hudson High School faced difficult decisions as they voted for class officers. Ballots were cast during the three lunches, and the results were announced Friday afternoon. 59% of the freshman class, 30% of the sophomores, 47% of the juniors, and 46% of seniors voted in the elections. Candidates submitted applications and essays to their class sponsors on Monday the 19th and decorated the halls with colorful and creative campaign posters throughout the week. The winners were chosen solely by the popular vote of their individual grade levels.
The 2016-2017 class officers are:
Freshman President: Kaleb Myles
Freshman Vice President: Caleb Newsome
Freshman Treasurer: Alyssa Kolb
Freshman Secretary: Kailey Waller
Sophomore President: Taylor Brazil
Sophomore Vice President: Natali Balderas
Sophomore Treasurer: Paxton Ford
Sophomore Secretary: Kassidy Amerson
Junior President: Andrew Farmer
Junior Vice President: Charles Mcleod
Junior Treasurer: Yajaira Rios
Junior Secretary: Presli Weiblinger
Senior President: Sutton Lowe
Senior Vice President: Helena Collmorgen
Senior Treasurer: Andrew Ward
Senior Secretary: Emily Baker
Class officers are involved in many activities, including designing various t-shirts and organizing activities. Upperclassmen officers are especially influential, because junior class officers plan prom and senior class officers potentially speak at graduation and plan class reunions. Senior VP Helena Collmorgen says, “Being a class officer comes with a huge responsibility. It means doing anything possible to make sure our class is well represented and led.”
Considering the many obligations, the choice to run for a class office is a major one; Collmorgen states that she “decided to run for Vice President because I love my class and thought it would be a great opportunity to represent them during our senior year.” Senior class President Sutton Lowe had similar reasons, saying, “My freshman year the senior class president was Clay Shupack, and I remember thinking ‘He’s a really cool guy’ and I wanted to be the Clay Shupack for this year’s freshman.”
Lowe and Collmorgen decided to campaign together, as did multiple candidates from various grades. “Helena and I are really good friends and I’m absolutely awful at artistic stuff and Helena is really creative, so it was a good mix,” says Lowe. This strategy proved to be effective, seeing as both Lowe and Collmorgen won their offices of choice. The pair exhibited the true leadership and sportsmanship, with Collmorgen saying “I knew that if I didn’t win, whoever got it would make an amazing VP because we had great students running!” and Lowe stating, “The two girls running against me were total sweethearts and the Hudson High School senior class would have been in good hands either way.”
Lowe and Collmorgen have numerous goals for the seniors, including winning the class competition and increased involvement. For the school year as a whole, Lowe says that “my plans for Hudson High School 2016-2017 is to unify the school while society is in a state of disunity. I can’t change the world being the senior class president, but it’s not a bad place to start.”
