Think You're Smart? UIL Academics Has a Place for YOU!!!

With each new year of high school a multitude of activities and clubs become available for students. Taking advantage of these opportunities can be hugely beneficial to anyone looking to expand their academic horizons, as well as just make new friends! One of the most sophisticated of these programs that Hudson High School offers is UIL Academics. UIL stands for “University Interscholastic League”, and provides students with educational experiences through competition. A vast variety of events are available for students to choose at their pleasure. Below is a summary of each UIL event along with the teacher-sponsor to get in contact with if you are interested in competing in that event.

Accounting- In this event you will be tested on the elementary principles and practices of accounting. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mrs. Bolt.

 

Computer Applications- This is an event for students with a thorough, working knowledge of the three Microsoft Office Programs: Word, Excel, and Access. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mrs. Gowin.

 

Current Issues & Events- This event focuses on current state, national, and world events/issues. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mr. Largent.

 

Literary Criticism- This event tests students’ familiarity with the concepts associated with literary analysis, authors, and works that represent English-language literary history, as well as some of its classical and international influences. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mrs. Weiblinger.

 

Ready Writing-  In this event students are given two hours to write expository compositions. They have a choice between two prompts, each an excerpt from literature, publications (past and present) or speeches. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mr. Harris.

 

Social Studies- In this event students master primary reading selections, as well as specific documents, and become familiar with general-knowledge social studies concepts and terms. The topic this year is World War I. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mr. Largent.

 

Spelling & Vocabulary- This event consists of a fifteen minute section of 30 multiple choice questions focused on vocabulary and proofreading, and a second section in which students spell 70 words pronounced aloud to contestants. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mrs. Weiblinger.

 

Computer Science- This event consists of a 45-minute written exam, along with a two hour team programming contest. The language used in this event is Java. The teacher sponsor for this event is Mr. Roberts.

 

Mathematics- This event consists of a 40-minute, multiple choice exam with 60 questions, designed to test knowledge and understanding in the areas of basic mathematics, algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry, math analysis, analytic geometry, pre-calculus and elementary calculus. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mr. Olszewski.

 

Number Sense-  This event involves a ten-minute, 80 question mental math test covering all high school mathematics courses. Short cuts need to be developed and practiced in order to compete and finish the test. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mr. Olszewski.

 

Science- In this event students will be given two-hour objective test with 60 questions -- 20 from biology, 20 from chemistry, and 20 from physics. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mrs. Mize.

 

Oral Reading (Poetry or Prose)- This event encourages the student to understand, experience and share poetry through the art of oral interpretation. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mr. Harris.

 

Extemporaneous Speaking (Persuasive)- This event judges students on their ability to persuade an audience in a formal and extemporaneous speaking environment. There is currently no teacher-sponsor for this event, but if you are interested in competing talk to Mr. Largent.

 

Extemporaneous Speaking (Informational)- This event judges students on their ability to inform an audience in a formal and extemporaneous speaking environment. There is currently no teacher-sponsor for this event, but if you are interested in competing talk to Mr. Largent.

 

Debate (Lincoln-Douglass)- This event is a type of one-on-one debate which places heavy emphasis on logic, ethical values, and philosophy. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mrs. Meisel.

 

Debate (Cross Examination)- This event is a partner based formatted debate involving cross examination (questioning), and places heavy emphasis on evidence and logic. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mrs. Meisel.

 

Journalism (Editorial Writing)- This event requires the student to write an editorial article, which means the student takes a particular stance on an issue. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mrs. Ratcliff.

 

Journalism (News Writing)- This event requires the student to write a news article detailing an event with the use of quotes and facts. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mrs. Ratcliff.

 

Journalism (Headline Writing)- This event requires the student to write a several headlines for news articles given to the students. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mrs. Ratcliff.

 

Journalism (Feature Writing)- This event requires the student to write a feature article, which tells a story through the use of quotes and vivid writing. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mrs. Ratcliff.

 

One Act Play- In this event students try-out for a role in a one-act-play. Students may be required to memorize lines, build props, and many other activities that go along with acting. The teacher-sponsor for this event is Mrs. Fenley.


Teams may have a full roster, so students are not guaranteed a spot on any event they choose. The website uiltexas.org was used for the descriptions of these events, and is a great resource for a more in-depth look.
