Martin Luther King Day is a holiday celebrated in the United States. It is a day to recognize a civil rights activist and minister that played a huge part in integrating the United States.

MLK Day was passed by congress to be observed the third Monday in January signed by President Reagan n 1983. Just like integration laws, the holiday also took awhile to become recognized nationwide. After several years the holiday became a required paid day off for most people. Today, I think Mr. King is not given the credit he deserves.

He devoted his life to making things right. He spent many nights in jail. He was beaten, and bullied. He never gave up. He was a huge part in fighting the way this were and the way things should be. He brought light to so many dark things, yet he did it peacefully.

Most Americans today are excited to get a long weekend, a paid day off, or an excuse to not have to face Monday. On this Martin Luther King’s Day I challenge you to think about the difference that he made. Think about who you would not have in your life, and think about the opportunities you might not have. It’s not just another Monday.
