Kristina Johnson

On February 3rd and 4th, in College Station, the Hudson swim team competed in the Regional Swim Meet.

Just a week before, both the boys and girls teams placed second in team totals at the District 17-5A competition held in Nacogdoches. Nolan Craft, Hudson junior, was named boys’ swimmer of the meet. The top six swimmers from each event advanced to regionals, and from Hudson this was:

  • Sylvie Gowin, junior (50 meter freestyle, 100 meter freestyle, 200 meter freestyle relay, 400 meter freestyle relay)

  • Emily Baker, senior (50 meter freestyle, 200 meter freestyle relay, 100 meter backstroke, 400 meter freestyle relay)

  • Lauren Egner, sophomore (100 meter freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, 400 freestyle relay)

  • Renee George, senior (100 meter butterfly, 200 meter freestyle relay)

  • Sarah Freeman, freshman (100 meter breaststroke, 400 meter freestyle relay)

  • Elizabeth Lawrence, freshman (200 meter freestyle relay)

  • Nolan Craft, junior (200 meter medley relay, 100 meter freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, 400 meter freestyle relay)

  • J Lopez, junior (200 meter medley relay, 100 meter butterfly, 100 meter breastroke, 400 meter freestyle relay)

  • Jacob Hufstetler, junior (200 meter medley relay, 100 meter butterfly, 400 meter freestyle relay)

  • Hunter Hancock, senior (200 meter medley relay, 50 meter freestyle, 400 meter freestyle relay)

  • Jose Villarreal, sophomore (200 meter freestyle, 200 meter freestyle relay)

  • Blake Byerly, junior (50 meter freestyle, 200 meter freestyle relay)

  • Jacob Lenderman, junior (200 meter freestyle relay)

  • Greg Lovett, sophomore (200 meter freestyle relay)

Before regionals, senior Emily Baker said, “We are super pumped up for regionals and we can’t wait to get to College Station and swim in the A&M pool! We have worked so hard and we are ready to put it all out there in our events!”

Their hard work has consisted of many hours of afterschool training since the beginning of the school year. “We have practiced extensively and used visualization techniques to bring into perspective goals for each specific event and individual,” said Baker.

In addition, the team’s strong bond and connection aided in the preparation for regionals. “During practice, swimming in the same lanes with 3 other people gives us the opportunity to be around people that undergo similar sets and hold similar goals,“ Baker said. “The environment is prime for encouragement!”

When at regionals, the team competed in one of the fastest regions in Texas, which featured a combination of intense 4A and 5A schools. Although no Hudson swimmers advanced to the State Meet, the team represented Hudson High School with their energy and optimism.

Congrats on a strong season Hudson Swim!
