A V.I.P. Affair

Jasmine Chae

Prom is one of the most significant markers in a high school student’s career. The perfect dresses are sought after. Tuxes are begrudgingly rented. The smell of spray tan lingers in the hallways. The salons get an influx of appointments. Dads reluctantly lend their cars to their eager teens. Curfews are extended. Everyone is done up from head to toe. It really is a night to remember.

“A lot of work and preparation goes into prom,” Taylor Squyres, senior, said. “But I know the memories will stay with me forever.”

Hudson High School’s 2017 prom took place on April 1 at the SFA ballroom from 7:30 to 11:30. The junior class officers and sponsors, along with other willing volunteers, were responsible for planning the long-awaited annual event.

“Prom was a lot of hard work,” Andrew Farmer, Junior Class President, said. “But the decorations turned out great, and everyone had tons of fun!”

This year’s prom had a “Hollywood” theme. The iconic red carpet was rolled out, along with lights aimed at prom goers like the paparazzi. The DJ was front and center on the stage, playing music as everyone danced along like no one was watching. It truly was a V.I.P. affair for the students.

“Prom was great,” Emily Bufkin, senior, said. “The music was much better than last year’s; they played ‘Pony’, which is my jam!”

After giving everyone plenty of time to arrive, whether on time or fashionably late, and warm up on the dance floor, it was finally time to announce Prom King and Queen, along with Duke and Duchess. This year’s Duke and Duchess was Trevor Beaty and Kendall Palmore. Then it was announced that the Prom King and Queen of 2017 was Andrew Ward and C.K. Wright.

“I wasn’t expecting to win Prom King,” Andrew Ward, senior Prom King, said. “I didn’t think anyone would actually vote for me.”

Prom may seem silly and overhyped from an outside perspective, but for seniors, prom signifies the final year of high school coming to a close. Prom is symbolic of what’s to come: graduation, college, and adulthood. The junior class did a great job of giving Hudson’s students one last V.I.P. affair for the 2016-17 school year.

“Now that prom’s over, these last couple weeks are going to fly by,” Sutton Lowe, senior, said. “I can’t wait for graduation!”
