Basketball teams jump into district season

The Hudson hornet basketball teams just began district games with the lady hornets finishing the first round 2-1 and the men beginning the first round 0-1.

“With district we have two more rounds of playing the same teams,” lady hornet Coach Kristen Hines said.

Each team in the district will play every other team three times during district games.

“We’re already in the playoffs, with there being only four teams in district, and our goal is to get past the second round where we got knocked out last year,” Hines said.

Both the men and women’s teams have prepared for this season with difficult schedules and ample practice.

“We’ve been to multiple tournaments against tough teams, top teams in the state, and it’s been good competition for us and it’s made us better and gotten us ready for district,” varsity player Jacob Huffstetler said.

More than just playing difficult games, the basketball teams have been bonding off court in a way that manifests in great teamwork on court.

“The tournaments [are my favorite part], because we get to spend time with our team and just hang out and have fun when we’re not playing games,” Huffstetler said.

The lady hornets demonstrate their growth as a team beautifully on the court with a 19-7 season record.

“We play as a team and we win some and we loose some, but over the years, this is the first time that we’ve actually come together and worked together as a team and made the right decisions in a game,” varsity player Kaci McCarty said.

Teamwork is vital. The basketball players nailed that aspect but are also focusing attention on training to be at the top of their game.

“We’ve had long practices and just been going over all the plays and scouting reports for the other teams to get us ready for the games,” Huffstetler said.

With fantastic team unity and months of training, the hornets are a force to be reckoned with.

“[Diboll is] our competition in district,” Hines said. “Our goal is to beat diboll. They gotta get it done, and we have two more chances.”

The basketball teams have what it takes to avenge the Tuesday night game against Diboll and begin what Coach Hines called “a nice little run in the playoffs”.

“This is one of the best years we’ve had in a really long time,” McCarty said. “Go Hornets!”
