Tennis team prepares for successful season

The Hudson tennis team is beginning their season with hard work, big goals, and a packed schedule.

"We will be hosting the annual Hudson Varsity tournament March 29 at the SFA courts," Kristina Johnson, varsity player and 2014-2015 state qualifier, said. "District will be held April 6 at Hudson. Regionals will be held April 18-20 in College Station at Bryan High School. State will be held May 16-17 in College Station at Texas A&M."

With the big tournaments and championship series on the schedule, the tennis team prepares by scheduling in many more matches in between.

"We have a lot of good tournaments coming up, ranging from Kilgore to Tyler and everywhere in between, and we are anxious to see what kind of competition is out there this season," Mary Catherine Beard, varsity player and team captain, said.

More than just competing, the tennis teams put ample hard work in during practice.

"We've started our after school practices and have been focusing on offensive strategies in our game," Beard said. "Our singles players have been challenging each other during practice matches and I have seen a huge improvement in the more aggressive nature of our doubles team strategies."

The strategic outlook covered, the team has also put a great emphasis on attitude.

"Everyone on the team has committed to bringing 100% to every single practice and also to having a Christian attitude regardless of the score," Johnson said.

Only athletes understand the unity necessary to have a successful team, and with commitments like these, it is no wonder the tennis team getting closer.

"I am looking forward to spending time with the team and getting to know our newer members a little better," Beard said. "We have a great group this year!"

All teams train with a purpose though, and the tennis team has their goals in mind already.

"This season I'm most looking forward to seeing everyone's hard work pay off at each tournament," Johnson said. "With the new district alignments, hopefully most of our team will advance to regionals."

Come and support the tennis team as the season gets underway and they go out representing Hudson on the tennis court; they have put many hours into it.

"I'm very proud of the hard work that my team has put in so far this year, and I know there is more to come. Most of all, though, I'm proud of the honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, and positive attitudes they have all shown at the matches we have been to."
