Hudson Track

Run, run as fast as you can

Holly Ratcliff

The Hudson track team is ready for an incredible season with a great attitude and team atmosphere while preparing for upcoming meets at SFA, Bullard, and TSU.

"There's just something about track season," senior Emma Godfrey said. "It's unlike anything else. Everybody gets a whole new energy when we're all on that track, and it's so cool to see everybody on the track team cheering and just supporting each other."

Even though running is typically an individual sport, teamwork is very important and the runners enjoy a strong relationship with their team.

"This track season I'm looking forward to meeting new competition and working with my team to win district," junior Christina Hernandez said. "I'm also ready to see the girls improve as well as myself!"

Winning district in track is obviously the goal, but a very possible accomplishment the majority of the track team is striving for.

"For our team all I want to do is to be able to win district," the current 4A state champion in the 400 meter dash, Peyton Davis, said. "And to take as many kids to regionals as we can."

For now though, the meet everyone is focused on is TSU: Texas Southern University track meet.

"TSU is a really big meet for us," Godfrey said. "Some of the fastest teams in the nation are there, so I'm really excited! It's probably one of my favorite meets of the year, and I'm just looking forward to that, to getting to spend time with the team, to racing some of these really big teams, to hopefully pushing for some PRs, and to having some really great finishes there."

This meet will host some of the fastest high schoolers in the country, so it is usually the most competitive meet of the year.

“A big meat for me is TSU,” Davis said. “I have always been ready for this meet and ready for the competition. Last year I came in ninth, and this year I want to be able to say that I was on the podium at TSU.”

More than just end results, the track team enjoys spending time as a team and participating in their traditions.

“One thing I love about our team is our routine prayer before every race,” Hernandez said. “I truly believe praying with Hudson runners, and sometimes even other schools, lifts pressure and nerves off our shoulders!”

The track team looks forward to an interesting season that is already off to a great start.

“It’s always so awesome to watch my teammates grow through the year, and this is kinda my last year to do that with my high school team,” Godfrey said. “I'm really excited to see where that will take us this year! Improvement is the biggest goal and just enjoying ourselves, because honestly that's what we're out there to do. Going out there and running with those girls every day is a blessing.”
