TSU Track Meet

TSU Track Meet

By: Krstina Johnson

On Friday, March 18th and Saturday the 19th, chosen members of our Hudson Hornet Track and Field team competed at Texas Southern University. The meet was split into junior high, high school, and college-age groups, featuring high schools from the Houston area, Georgia State University, and Rice University.

Amidst weather delays on Friday and a cold front on Saturday, the Hornets still managed to take home great experience after racing against tough competitors. Christina Hernandez, who competed in the 1600-meter preliminary, the 1600-meter final, and the 4x400-meter relay, says, “At this meet, there were a lot of individual runners that were extremely good! Most of the sprinters were ranked nationally in the top 20.” Hernandez represented Hudson well, finishing 1st in her heat of the 1600-meter preliminary and 3rd in the 1600-meter final. The other Hornets did well also, although according to 110-meter and 300-meter hurdler Avery McElveen, “A few athletes didn’t perform how they wanted to, so we wish we could have done better.”

On top of getting to race against stiff competition, the track team got to watch the college runners compete, which was another learning experience in itself. “Being able to watch the college athletes was really awesome because we got a glimpse of what it would be like to run in college against all of the tough colleges,” says Hernandez.

Overall, this highly competitive track meet prepared the track team for their upcoming UIL meets. “Other than the weather, the experience was really good; It was a lot of fun, and I feel more prepared for district and regionals,” says McElveen. Hernandez feels much the same way, saying, “Running at TSU made me really excited and prepared to race at district, regionals, and hopefully state! The type of fast competition that was at this meet is very similar to the runners at the regional and state level.”

Good Luck Hudson Track and Field!
