About Show Choir

FAQs About Show Choir:

“What is show choir?”  Show choir is a branch of the choir program here in Hudson.  Students give dynamic performances that require them to sing and dance at the same time.

“What does show choir in Hudson do?” This past school year, we worked hard and played hard.  We have given performances here in Hudson, gone on an overnight retreat to a campsite to build team spirit with activities like high ropes and have more intensive practice time, and traveled to the Austin area to compete (and made 3rd place!  And went to Topgolf!).  We also gave a local performance tour and were featured in the end-of-year Spring Show.

“What kind of music does the Hudson show choir perform?”  We perform songs from “popular music” genres including rock, pop, R&B, Broadway, and more.  Some of our songs are modern and edgy (but school-appropriate), while others are classics from rock-n-roll times gone by.

“Is show choir in Hudson expensive?”  It is not expensive at all!  In recent years, the cost for show choir has actually gone down dramatically.  Most of students’ travel expenses are covered when going on a trip that is required of the group members.  (For instance, for our competition trip to Austin, students each paid $15.)  This year we required students to purchase a set of specific shoes, which cost around $40.  All other show choir attire was provided for students’ use and is the property of Hudson ISD.

“Can I be a part of show choir without joining the traditional choir?”  Of course not. The traditional choir program is the bedrock of the show choir program.  In “regular choir,” you will build vocal technique and stamina; you will gain music literacy skills to become a competent, independent musician; and you will experience multiple styles and genres of music to become a more well-rounded artist.  Every member of the show choir is enrolled in a traditional choir class.

“When does show choir practice?”  We have practices outside of the school day about twice a week, focusing primarily on choreography.  The vocal parts are primarily learned during regular choir time.

“Who can try out for show choir?”  Here’s a description of students who should consider trying out:

1. Will be in high school in 2019-2020 school year.  Note: we are willing to consider adding a few outstanding 8th graders who can meet our standards.
2. Has consistently maintained academic eligibility throughout the previous school year.
3. Loves to sing and is willing to sing in front of others.
4. Loves to dance and/or is interested in learning how to dance.
5. Has a positive attitude, gets along well with others, and is a reliable team player.
6. Is not over-scheduled and has time for extracurricular practices and other activities.
7. Is willing to enroll and fully participate in a traditional Hudson choir class.

When and where will tryouts be held?  Tryouts for the 2019-2020 school year have already taken place.  In the first couple of weeks of the school year, however, we would be willing to consider auditioning a student who has recently moved to Hudson.

I have questions that still have not been answered here.  Please e-mail Mrs. Turner at maryturner@hudsonisd.org.  I’ll get back to you as soon as I can!
