TELPAS

What is TELPAS?

TELPAS is an assessment program for students in Texas public schools who are learning the English language. The letters in TELPAS stand for the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System. The Texas Education Agency developed TELPAS to meet state and federal requirements.

Why do students take Telpas?

If students have certain special needs and require special accommodations, they may be tested in a different area of the school. Why? TELPAS tests are designed to measure the progress that each EL makes in becoming proficient in the use of academic English.

How can I get out of Telpas?

If the student scores Advanced High on the writing domain of TELPAS, the student has met exit criteria. In addition to a student meeting the testing qualifications for exit, the LPAC must include input from the subjective teacher evaluation when determining a final exit decision.

Is Telpas test mandatory?

Please note, the TELPAS Test is a TEA Mandated State Assessment and is mandatory for any student who is identified as LEP/ESL in Skyward.
